This may sound like a weird title but I wanted to post it because it might really help another parent someday that needs to remove fiberglass out of a kid’s hand, you never know!
Well, during the summer and while Adrian had his cast on, the kids were playing at Grandpa’s backyard and all of a sudden Adrian comes in screaming cause his hand hurts (the one that doesn’t have the cast on), we try to look at it and see if he has a cut, a scrape, a burn, or did he break it too? But no, nothing, the arm and the hand were perfectly fine, although he was still screaming and not comfortable at all, it was quite alarming not to know what it was!
I then asked him what were they doing out there? What were they playing with? He showed us several places and things they were getting into and one of them was the filter tank for the jacuzzi, weird yes that they were playing with that but it didn’t seem to have anything bad although I did notice it was shining and immediately made me think of pica-pica (a term that we used for some type of fiberglass powder back in high school to play pranks on other students, it made their skin itch!). Still, we weren’t sure it was that, since we didn’t see anything at all in his hand.
We went home and looked more at his hand, we did start seeing shiny things, and then tried to find remedies for it, my mom told me to submerge his hand in flour, and that worked to calm him down for a little bit but when the hand was out it still hurt. So that’s when I finally googled it and found the answer! I’m so thankful for it! The solution for removing the fiberglass is to use tape! I grabbed pieces of packing tape and pressed it against his skin and voulá! It worked! It was so easy and magical!
And guess what? Right about when we are taking Adrian’s fiberglass off, Maya –who was sleep already and never showed signs of fiberglass in her hands– starts screaming that her hands hurt! We ran to her and we did see shinny thingies, we applied the tape and listo! Done!

Cómo remover fibra de vidrio de las manos
Este título puede sonar un poco raro y diferente pero lo quise escribir porque en algún momento le puede ser útil a otros padres, uno nunca sabe cuando tenga que quitar fribra de vidrio de las manos de los niños!
Resulta que durante el verano cuando
Adri tenía su brazo enyesado, los niños estaban jugando un día en el patio de la casa de abuelo y derepente Adri entra gritando que su mano le duele mucho (la que no tenía el yeso), nosotros tratamos de ver que tenía, si una cortada, o un rasguño o una quemadura, será que se quebró otro hueso? Pero nada, no le vimos nada malo a la mano aunque el seguía gritando como si le estuvieran pegando, la verdad que dificil poque no sabíamos que carriso hacer.
Entonces le empezé a preguntar que era lo que estaban haciendo afuera cuando le empezó a doler la mano, con qué jugaban? Me llevó y me enseñó varias cosas, entre ellas me llamó la atención que tocaron un tanque o filtro del jacuzzi, un poco extraño que estuvieran jugando con eso pero bueno no se le veía nada malo excepto que me fijé que estaba brillante y era de fribra de vidrio. Inmediatamente me acordé del
polvo picapica (super famoso en el liceo, los estudiantes se lo ponían a otros y les causaba una picazón horrible en la piel y claro, la canción de Hombre G!). De todas maneras, todavía no estábamos seguros, yo era la única que sabía de esto y nadie me creía mucho y aparte no le veíamos nada en la mano a Adrian.
Nos regresamos a la casa y seguimos investigando su mano, le empezamos a ver las cositas brillantes ya en la mano y entonces tratamos de buscar remedios, mi mamá me dijo que le pusiera la mano en harina, que eso lo calmaría, eso hicimos y si lo calmó pero sólo por un rato, cuando la sacó le dolía igual. Así que finalmente se me ocurrió buscar bien en Google y encontré un artículo! La solución para quitar la fibra de vidrio de las manos es usar teipe! Agarramos pedazos de teipe de empacar y se los pusimos varias veces en la mano y vualá! Funcionó de inmediato! Fué tan mágico!
Y mientras que le estábamos aplicando el teipe a Adrian derepente Maya empezó a llorar –desde su cuna, ella ya estaba dornida y todo!– y a decir mi mano, mi mano! Corrimos, se las vimos, y efectivamente se le veían los brillanticos, le pusimos teipe y listo!
