The clean-your-room issue was looking really difficult and I just didn’t know what else to come up with. We’ve tried lots and lots of things and charts. Until I thought about this one and it works! I’m so happy that it works, I can’t even believe it, that’s why I wanted to share it here.
Our first technique was to tell him to clean-up his room or we would clean it for him and take away the toys we cleaned up for a while. Well, that didn’t work, we kept taking away stuff and it caused lots of whining, screaming and mess. Then, we usually warned him with not going to some place he was looking forward to but it didn’t work either. Sometimes those techniques worked but he took hooooooours to do it.
So the chart was born. At the beginning it worked like this: Every time he cleaned the room he got a sticker and every time I cleaned the room I got a sticker, he would get a surprise if he filled his side. BUT, by the third time I told him I was going to clean-up he said: -go ahead mami, you can get another sticker! And that’s when I thought: Oh no! This is not going to work!
So I decided to change-it-up, I told him that for every time he cleans up the room he gets 2 stickers and for every time I clean the room I get 2 stickers plus one of his stickers gets taken away. And this system is the one that works. He has been eager to clean his room a lot, sometimes he takes long and complains but now he keeps saying he’s not going to let me get another sticker and he was so excited to finish it and get his surprise. I gave him a little toy I had from the consignment sale, and I plan to get some 99cts toys for the next ones cause there is already a new one hanged up and ready to go!
-By the way, the chart is really simple as you can see, I make these quick with a piece of paper and a marker like I did long time ago when potty training. I wish I could do a nice design and all but then I know I will take too long trying to make it pretty and perfect and the chart would never get done!!-
