This week was Adrian and Maya’s first day of school, this year it is very different for our family because Maya is entering Kindergarten in the same Spanish Immersion school as Adrian. Entering Kindergarten (Or transitional kinder) here is a big deal and even more when it’s a full immersion Spanish school!
Maya was in such a great family day care with some preschool activities during 3 years and she left that place being the big girl, she did so many great activities, fun outings and even celebrated her birthday parties there so she was feeling a little uneasy about not going there anymore.
Maya said she wasn’t excited to go to the same school as Adrian, she asked if they celebrated each birthday with jumpies too? And when learning that there were no jumpies at school she was very disappointed! But we kept the excitement going and of course we know she will love the environment of her new class, she will love to be with kids her same age and learn a lot.
So the first day came and went and guess what? She is super excited! She still hides it a little bit by not saying she is actually happy but the first thing she played when coming back from school was school! She was so cute! She sat in a chair in the middle of her room with a bunch of books and her new folder pretending she was the teacher. She was even saying some words in Spanish! (Insert big heart emoticon here!)
The next day she came back with some drawings of a boy from a book they read, she said this boy was a bad boy and spoke before raising his hands, he had bad manners and he put his hands in paint and touched everything, she told me all these things about her drawing! They are obviously learning about rules and manners in the classroom this week.
Going back to school for Adrian is a piece of cake but he does have a new role of the big brother in school as well. He was super happy to be with his friends again and he was telling Maya what to do and where to go, he is wearing the big brother hat so well! I am super proud of him!
Having the two kids back in school is a great feeling and having them in the same place even more. I already hear stories about how they saw each other during the day and said hi. And when it was time to go Adrian looked for Maya so she wouldn’t get lost :).
This time I didn’t actually cry or get watery eyes. I think I was so preoccupied with the experience being good for Maya that I didn’t have time to even think myself. But overall the feeling is of happiness and unbelievably proud, I am so excited they are advancing in life and that we started a new stage, I love new beginnings!
PS: One thing that worked wonders to help with the first day madness was making them practice their routine the day before. They did everything and got all dressed, hair done and all! The next day it was a piece of cake for both and they got up right away to do their morning routines!
