Different ways to enjoy the beach in San Diego

Different ways to enjoy the beach in San Diego: WindandSea beach -MamiTalks.com

I grew up in Venezuela, very used to going to the beach only on weekends and it had to be very sunny and hot. The beach was also synonymous of a long weekend where we stayed at someone’s place, a big group, sun, sand, delicious tropical heat in Venezuela’s beaches. I miss that a lot, but since here in San Diego we are so close to the beach and it’s not tropical of course, but there are many different ways to enjoy the beach!

When it’s a Little Cold

Many times in San Diego, you go somewhere (a shop, a restaurant or the park) and it turns out that it’s right by the beach, the kids immediately see the water and run towards it, so we almost always end up at the beach anyways.

I have noticed this for a couple of years in San Diego, so I prepared myself, and it is what I recommend to you also if you live here or come to visit or even if you live in another similar place that has the beach nearby.

To watch them being so happy is one of my favorites things and even though they come out shaking because they’re freezing cold and we don’t have a towel, it doesn’t matter because as my mom says, no one can take away your dance! (It’s a Spanish saying!!).

Adri is the “sea boy” because when he comes to the beach he immediately goes to the water, it doesn’t matter if he has clothes on, or if it’s cold, he goes and gets wet! Maya not as much as Adrian but she does love playing with the sand and water.

When it’s Very Cold

Sometimes it doesn’t occur to us to go to the beach when it’s super cold during winter but the truth is, as you know, here in San Diego it doesn’t get that cold, so we go bundled up but the kids just go for the water without us planning it, we let them enjoy. One day we went in the middle of winter and the kids got soaking wet but still wanted ice cream afterwards, that was priceless!!

Only for One Hour

One day we strolled through Coronado island and visited a shipwreck that because of the low tide was out in the open. Many years have passed since it sank and the tide had never been this low. We were not prepared to get into the water, we just went sightseeing and there they went straight into it!! Another day I went to take pictures during the magic hour and Adrian was with me, we explored some tide pools, there are so many little nooks here on the beaches that make it so easy to explore and not get bored.

Be Always Ready

I always have the following in the car:

  • Towels
  • Swimsuits for everyone
  • Change of clothes (for everyone too!)
  • Flipflops
  • Blanket to spread on the sand
  • Sand toys or balls to play on the beach

And this has served me well so well, go and prepare yours now!

Going to the Park Right by the Beach

San Diego has the bay that makes many little beaches, sometimes I like to go to one of the parks that are right by the bay but the kids see the beach and, you guessed it, they end up playing there more than in the park, which is cool because they explore it a different way I think.

As you can see, I already got used to the different ways to enjoy the beach in San Diego, in fact, not only can you enjoy a full day, it can be for half an hour, during winter, when it’s cold, endless possibilities! What’s your favorite way to enjoy the beach?

Thanks for those wonderful beach tips. I may not live in San Diego but my son and I will definitely use the tips at whichever beach we visit this summer.
