During our week of staycation last year we went to The Desert View Tower. It’s an awesome place in the middle of the Interstate Highway 8. It is about an hour away from San Diego.

To remind you, our staycation week is a week I take off during Summer and spend it with the kids in San Diego and surroundings. It’s usually the last week of Summer for us and this year will be our 3rd year keeping this tradition! I get very excited about these things!! Oh and the kids now call it Mami Camp!

The Desert View Tower is something so unique. The tower was built in 1922 as a monument to the pioneers and road builders of the time.

Right by the Tower is Boulder Park that has fun creature carvings and caves. It was built by an unemployed engineer in 1933, Merle Ratcliff.

As soon as we got there, we went to the Desert View Tower first.

The Tower has a gift shop on the bottom level, it’s cool because it goes all around it with nice views. The shop feels more like going into somebody’s living room with lots of little things to look at! There are crystals, jewelry, toys, books, home decor, anything you can think of! The kids were very entertained with a self-playing piano and the person in the store was super friendly with us.

There is a fee to pay if you want to go up the Tower:

$6.50 for Adults
$3.50 for kids

In every level, there are lots of things to see, kind of like a museum/store combination.

We did climb to the very top. There is a spiral staircase in the top level that leads to the very middle top of the Tower! Adrian was very scared to go but all made it! It’s kind of like a half floor up there and you do feel the wind and altitude very strong up there! We took a couple of selfies and climbed down right away!!

Next, we went to the Boulder park. This was the best part for the kids, kind of like a natural amusement park!

All the carvings are amazing, some huge and some small but sometimes they surprise you while you are going through it. They loved exploring the caves, climbing some stairs in there and then enjoying the views.

The whole place kind of feels like visiting somebody’s ranch, we saw a turkey and kind of played with it and two, we also saw two dogs, pretty much everything in there was entertaining!

After the end of our little journey, we sat in the shade and had some snacks that we brought with us, although the gift shop also sells snacks and drinks if you need.

We still talk about this day, I think it was one of the most fun and unique places we’ve visited during Mami Camp!

LA TORRE CON VISTA AL DESIERTO: UN TESORO ESONDIDO

Durante nuestra semana de vacaciones en nuestra ciudad el año pasado, fuimos a la Torre del Desierto (Desert View Tower). Es un lugar impresionante en el medio de la autopista interestatal 8. Está como a una hora de San Diego.

Les recuerdo que nuestra semana de vacaciones en la ciudad es una semana que me tomo libre durante el verano y la paso con los niños en San Diego y sus alrededores. Por lo general es la última semana del verano y este año será nuestro tercer año manteniendo esta tradición! ¡Yo me emociono mucho con estas cosas! Ah, y los niños ahora la llaman Mami Camp!

La Torre del Desierto es una cosa tan única. La torre fue construida en 1922 como un monumento hacia los pioneros y constructores de carreteras de la época.

Justo al lado de la Torre se encuentra el Parque Boulder (quiere decir roca o peñasco) que tiene rocas talladas en forma de criaturas y también tiene cuevas. Fue construido por un ingeniero desempleado en 1933, Merle Ratcliff.

Apenas llegamos, entramos a la torre primero ya que ahí adentro hay que comprar las entradas.

La tarifa a pagar si quieres subir la Torre y entrar al parque es:

$ 6.50 para adultos
$ 3.50 para niños

La torre tiene una tienda de regalos en el primer nivel, es chévere porque le da la vuelta a la torre, es un piso circular y ya desde ahí hay vistas muy lindas del desierto.

La tienda se siente más bien como la sala de estar de una casa, ¡con un montón de coroticos que ver! Hay cristales, joyería, juguetes, libros, y cualquier otra cosita que se puedan imaginar. Los niños se entretuvieron con un piano que tocaba solo y aparte la persona que atendía en la tienda fue super amable con nosotros.

En cada uno de los niveles de la torre cuando vas subiendo hay un montón de cosas que ver, es como una combinación de museo y tienda. Nosotros subimos hasta la parte de arriba, en el último nivel hay una escalera de caracol que te lleva a un último medio piso donde te puedes asomar del torso para arriba nada más. Adrian estaba muy asustado de subir pero lo hizo! Sientes el viento y la altitud más fuerte ahí arria, nos tomamos un par de selfies y bajamos ahí mismito.

Después de subir la torre fuimos al Boulder Park. Este fue lo máximo para los niños, es como un parque de diversiones al natural!

Todas las esculturas de piedra son increíbles, algunas enormes y otras pequeñas, pero a veces te sorprenden mientras estás explorando. Les super encantó explorar las cuevas, subir y bajar las escaleritas que se encontraban por ahí y disfrutar de las vistas.

Todo el lugar en conjunto se siente como visitar la hacienda de alguien, vimos un pavo y medio jugamos con él, tmbién vimos dos perros, ¡prácticamente todo ahí era entretenido!

Al final de nuestro pequeño recorrido nos sentamos bajo la sombrita a comernos nuestra merienda que habíamos llevado, aunque en la tienda también venden snacks y bebidas si lo necesitas.

Todavía seguimos comentando de este día, creo que fue uno de los lugares más divertidos y únicos que hemos visitado durante Mami Camp!
