As you know, we had our family trip to the Grand Canyon and the first 2 days we stayed at this hotel that has a train that takes you directly to the Grand Canyon, it is called Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel, it is in a city called Williams, one hour away from the Grand Canyon if you go by car.

If this is the first time you visit the Grand Canyon and with kids, I super recommend it. I went straight to their site where I found cool packages.

THE PACKAGE WE CHOSE

We decided on the 3 days and 2 nights package, the cool thing is that the packages include almost everything, 2 breakfasts and 2 buffet dinners, the train tickets, the entrance to the park and of course the hotel stay.

As we had been driving all day, we arrived late afternoon and went straight to dinner after checking in at the hotel. It turns out that kids enjoyed the buffet meals so much! It made me laugh because they were fascinated and couldn’t stop talking about the food. I think the buffets were good, it was worth the money. The total of our package was $ 730, all of it included.

WHAT TO DO IN WILLIAMS

There is a part of what was the great route 66 in the small town of Williams, it is a road that became very famous because it connected Chicago to Los Angeles for the first time.

Couple blocks away from the Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel are about 4 blocks with many touristy shops and restaurants where you can enjoy a lot of the Pop culture from the 40’s, those Diner type and soda fountain restaurants, the classic cars of the time, soda ads… It’s cool to see a little bit of everything and walk through those blocks as a tourist.

There are also lots of arts and crafts for sale in the stores and shows from the Wild Wild West. I believe that almost every night they have one in Williams and it is announced in several posters through the town.

We were having a drink in a restaurant at the tables outside and suddenly people began to gather to watch the show, we immediately got out and waited with the crowd! The kids were kind of scared but at the end they had fun. There are actors who simulate encounters as if they lived in the wild West, they have guns and they use blank bullets which are so loud!!

HOW IS THE TRAIN RIDE?

The day of the train ride and the arrival at the Grand Canyon is the best! It takes about 2 hours to get there. At the hotel, there is also a Wild West show before leaving early in the morning.

There are several travel classes you can choose in the train. Because we start traveling in the morning we chose the Pullman class car where there is no air conditioning and the windows can be opened, then, on our way back we chose coach class with AC (you need to decide this the moment you make your reservation). You can access the café car from both of these and they have snacks, coffee, etc.

• There are attendants for each car that are very lively and tell stories and any questions you have about the Grand Canyon they will help you.
• There is also a photographer who takes photos of your family and sells them on the way back, I always want the photos that are taken in the places we visit, so we bought them!
• There are musicians and entertainers who also pass through each car, they don’t let you get bored!
• Oh and you each get a Grand Canyon map, super helpful!

Oh and on the way back there is a “surprise” robbery, some villains stop the train running while on horses and get inside all the cars! I expected the act to be a little better, I guess for the kids is fine, but it was not so well-orchestrated. I know, I am very picky!

ITINERARY ON THE FIRST DAY OF GRAN CAÑÓN

The train leaves Williams at 9:30 am, arrives at the Grand Canyon almost at noon so you have about 3 hours to explore whatever you can because the train departs at 3:30pm. It is not much time, what we did was walk close-by, The Village area.

On the map, everything seems close but in reality, tit’s all s huge! We first went to the Kolb Studio, inside there are photography exhibitions and the history of the Kolb brothers which were Grand Canyon pioneer photographers, the views from the studio are wonderful too.

We walked along the rim of the canyon and visited the Lookout Studio, which was made precisely for people to take photos from there and to use telescopes, we went to the Hopi House where they sell very nice and different arts and crafts, then we also went to the Verkamp’s Visitor Center where you learn a little more about the history of the park.

We ate at the Maswik Lodge restaurant area, it’s like a food fair where you can choose all kinds of food, so if someone wants a burger and the other Chinese food then that’s fine!

There are lots of squirrels everywhere and also many deer!! We learned that the squirrels are the most dangerous animals in the Grand Canyon because they ask for food and when you give them they bite your fingers!! Sometimes they can infect you with rabies so be very careful!!

I loved choosing the Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel for our first nights. It seems to me that getting to the park for the first time as a family on the train is super cool. NUESTRA EXPERIENCIA EN EL HOTEL Y EL TREN DEL GRAN CAÑÓN

Como ya saben, les conté de nuestro viaje familiar al Grand Cañón y los primeros 2 días nos quedamos en este Hotel que tiene un tren que va directo al Gran Cañon, se llama Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel, queda en una ciudad que se llama Williams, a una hora del Gran Cañón.

Si es la primera vez que visitan el Gran Cañón y con niños, se los super recomiendo. Yo me metí directo en la página de ellos y encontré paquetes chéveres.

EL PAQUETE QUE ELEGIMOS

Decidimos el de 3 días y 2 noches, lo chévere es que los paquetes incluyen casi todo, 2 desayunos y 2 cenas tipo buffet, los pasajes del tren, la entrada al parque y por supuesto la estadía en el hotel.

Como veníamos todo el día manejando, llegamos en la tarde casi noche y nos fuimos directo a cenar despues de chequearnos en el hotel. Resulta que los niños disfrutaron un mundo las comidas tipo buffet! Me dió mucha risa, porque estaban fascinados. Estaba bueno el buffet, me parece que para lo que pagamos estuvo muy bien. El total de nuestro paquete fue de $730 incluyendo todo.

QUE HACER EN WILLIAMS

En la pequeña ciudad de Williams hay una parte de lo que era la gran ruta 66, es una carretera que se hizo muy famosa porque conectaba a Chicago con Los Angeles por primera vez. Entonces ahí mismo a una cuadra del Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel están unas 4 cuadras con muchas tiendas turísticas y restaurancitos donde se disfruta mucho de la cultura Pop de la época de los 40, esos restaurantes tipo “Diners” , los carros clásicos de la época que empiezan a tener más importancia, los anuncios de refrescos, en fin, es chévere ver un poquito de todo y caminar por esas cuadras a modo bien turista!

También hay bastantes artesanías locales y shows del Wild Wild West (osea el Oeste salvaje). Yo creo que casi todas las noches los hacen en alguna cuadra de Williams y está anunciado en varios carteles. Nosotros estábamos tomándonos algo en un restaurant en las mesas de afuera y de repente se empezó a juntar gente para ver el show, de inmediato nos salimos y nos metimos en el bululú! Los niños estaban medio asustados pero se divirtieron. Son actores que simulan un pleito como si vivieran en la época de vaqueros del lejano Oeste, tienen pistolas y los tiros son de salva y suenan durísimo!!

COMO ES EL PASEO EN EL TREN

¡El día del paseo en el tren y la llegada al Gran Cañón es lo máximo! El viaje es de 2 horas aproximadamente. Desde tempranito en el hotel también hacen un show del vaqueros antes de salir.

Hay varias clases en las que puedes viajar. Como es temprano en la mañana nosotros escogimos el vagón donde no hay aire acondicionado y se pueden abrir las ventanas,la clase Pullman. Ya de regreso si escogimos la siguiente clase que es con aire, clase Coach (todo esto lo escoges cuando haces tu reservación). Hay un vagón que puedes accesar si vas en estas clases que tiene un cafecito si te da hambre.

• Los guías dentro del vagón son muy animados y van contando historias y cualquier pregunta que tengas del Gran Cañón ellos te ayudan.
• Hay un fotógrafo que te toma fotos de tu familia y de regreso te las vende, yo no me pude aguantar, siempre quiero las fotos que nos toman en los sitios que visitamos!
• Hay músicos y animadores que pasan también por cada vagón, osea no te dejan aburrir!
• Ten en cuenta que a todos nos regalan un mapa muy bueno del Gran Cañón

Ah y en el regreso hay un atraco “sorpresa”, unos villanos paran el tren corriendo con unos caballos y todos y se meten dentro de todos los vagones! Yo me lo esperaba mejor, la verdad para los niños está bien, pero no fue tan bien orquestrado. Ya se, ¡soy muy exigente!

ITINERARIO EN EL PRIMER DÍA DEL GRAN CAÑÓN

El tren sale de Williams a las 9:30 de la mañana y llega al Gran Cañón casi al mediodía entonces tienes como 3 horas para explorar nada más porque el tren se regresa a las 3:30. No es mucho tiempo, nosotros lo que hicimos fue conocer la parte central que se llama The Village.

En el mapa todo parece cerquita pero en realidad ahí adentro todo eso es un mundo!! Es gigante! Nosotros fuimos primero a conocer el Kolb Studio, adentro hay exhibiciones de fotografía y de la historia de esos hermanos Kolb, fotógrafos pioneros del Gran Cañón, las vistas de ese lugar son maravillosas también.

Paseamos por el borde (lo que le dicen el rim) del cañón y visitamos el Lookout Studio, que se hizo precisamente para que la gente tomara fotos desde ahí y usando telescopios, fuimos al Hopi House donde venden artesanías muy lindas y diferentes que en otras tienditas, después fuimos al Verkamp’s Visitor Center donde aprendes un poco más de la historia del parque.

Comimos en el Maswik Lodge, es como una feria donde te venden de todo tipo de comida, así que si alguien quiere hamburguesa y el otro comida china, ¡listo!

Se ven una cantidad de ardillas por todos lados y también muchos venados!! Aprendimos que las ardillas son los animales más peligrosos del Gran Cañón porque te piden comida y cuando les das te muerden los dedos!! A veces te pueden contagiar de rabia así que mucho cuidado!!

A mi me encantó haber escogido este hotel y paseo en tren. Me parece que llegar así por primera vez al parque en familia es muy chévere. Ya los demás días nos fuimos a otro hotel y llegamos en carro, aquí en el otro post les cuento más de nuestro viaje en familia al Gran Cañón.
