Chicano Park Visit in San Diego

When you come to San Diego and drive around there is no way to miss these colorful freeway murals. They are part of Chicano Park.

We’ve been living here for about 9 years now and we had actually never really done a Chicano park visit!! It was always on my list until finally, I took the kids during Mami Camp.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

Chicano Park is in Barrio Logan, San Diego, it has a lot of history which I am not a deeply specialized in but what I’ve learned is that it was built about 50 years ago right after the construction of the Colorado bridge. The residents of Barrio Logan were divided by this huge freeway and they demanded a green zone, so the park was born.

At one point Barrio Logan had one of the biggest Chicano populations so there is the name, and now it is one of the biggest with the most public murals ever! I know that we didn’t see them all, it’s big!

CHICANO PARK VISIT WITH KIDS

I love that we went the time we did (Summer 2019). The kids are older and might not be oo interested in stopping for too long to admire the art. But they are old enough to absorb what they were looking at even without thinking. I stood behind and let them be, let them be attracted to whichever piece they were attracted to, let them use the space however they wanted.

I love how Maya would go touch some of the art, I wondered what she thought. Some of them scared her she said, but maybe those are the ones that she will remember later and not in a scary way?

THAT FEELING…

A Chicano Park visit is a great way of getting to feel that area’s history when you come to San Diego. For me, it is very inspiring and amazing how art adorns the huge freeway columns.

I love that it is not only a green area but a cultural celebration of Latino heritage, in this case, I would say mostly Mexican of course. But as a Venezuelan Latina, I identify with many of the art displayed, the colors, the stories and the famous figures, at the end of the day art is so defined by what you feel, it doesn’t matter why or where.

They also host a bunch of events there that hopefully will come back after the pandemic passes.  If you want to learn more about Chicano Park’s history check out this website or this one too they even have a mural map! I have to go back with that map and some friends, who wants to come?

VISITA A CHICANO PARK SAN DIEGO

Cuando vienes a San Diego y manejas por ahí, no hay manera de que no veas estos murales tan coloridos desde la autopista. Resulta que son parte del Chicano Park.

Vivimos aquí en San Diego desde hace aproximadamente 9 años ya ¡y la verdad nunca habíamos ido al Chicano Park! Siempre lo tenía en mi lista de lugares donde ir hasta que finalmente llevé a los niños durante uno de los Mami Camps.

¿DONDE ESTÁ LOCALIZADO?

Chicano Park está en el Barrio Logan en San Diego, tiene mucha historia de la que no soy muy experta, pero lo que he aprendido es que fue construido hace unos 50 años justo después de la construcción del puente a la isla Colorado. Los residentes de Barrio Logan fueron divididos devido a la gran autopista y exigieron una zona verde, por lo que nació el parque.

En un momento, el Barrio Logan tenía una de las poblaciones más grandes de chicanos, así que de ahí el nombre, ¡y ahora es uno de los parques más grandes con murales públicos de la historia! Cuando fuimos se que no los vimos a todos, ¡es super grande!

VISITA CON NIÑOS A CHICANO PARK

Me encanta que hayamos ido cuando lo hicimos (verano del 2019). Los niños ya más grandecitos y aunque puede que no estén muy interesados en admirar el arte si son lo suficientemente mayores como para absorber lo que estaban mirando, incluso sin pensar. Me quedé atrás de ellos y los dejé ser, que se sintieran atraídos por la pieza que les atraía, que usaran el espacio como quisieran.

Me encanta cómo Maya tocaba parte del arte, me preguntaba en qué pensaba… Me dijo que algunos de ellos la asustaban, pero ¿quizás esos son los que recordará más en el futuro y puede que no de la misma manera?

El parque también tiene un área de columpios, Maya estuvo allí por un tiempo, mira aquí estas fotos que hice de ella allí también para otro post.

ESA SENSACIÓN…

Una visita al Chicano park es una excelente manera de sentir la historia de esa área cuando vienes a San Diego. Para mí, es muy inspirador y sorprendente cómo el arte adorna las columnas enooormes de la autopista.

Me encanta que no solo sea una zona verde, sino una celebración cultural de la herencia latina, en este caso, diría que en su mayoría mexicana, por supuesto. Pero como latina venezolana, me identifico con muchas de las obras de arte exhibidas, los colores, las historias y las figuras famosas, al final, el arte está tan definido por lo que sientes, que no importa por qué ni cómo ni de dónde viene.

También organizan un montón de eventos allí que, ojalá y vuelvan después de que pase la pandemia.
