I took note of Niki’s work for the first time when I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, they have a couple of Niki de Saint Phalle sculptures there in the garden.

I noticed her work because it is super colorful, it reminds me of Gaudí, which she mentions did inspire her work. And little did I know I had seen her work before in San Diego, like the famous Nikigator in Balboa Park, which I told you about and this huge amazing one!

There is a lot of Niki De Saint Phalle’s art in San Diego because she lived here for the last years of her life. She was born in France, grew up in New York City, then lived in France, traveled to Spain, Italy, she says she believes she is a citizen of the world (check out her full story here)

As soon as I heard about this exhibit at California Center for the Arts I immediately planned a visit with the family. It was nice to go see and learn more about her work for me and I think the kids and Derek really enjoyed it.

They even have a little brochure with activities for kids to do while looking at the exhibit. They got to sketch some of the artwork and draw their name in a fun Niki alphabet.

One of her big works is a sculpture garden, she dreamed of making it since she first went to Gaudí’s Park Güell in Barcelona.

And she built it in San Diego!! I’m so proud about that! Ever since I know about this sculpture garden “Queen Califa’s Magical Circle” I want to visit it but they only open it the second Saturday of the month from 9 to 2 . So I need to get planning and make it there! Now that the kids saw pictures and the maquette Niki made at the exhibit, they want to go really soon.

I didn’t have a “favorite” artist before and I think that defining one is very helpful, even if you’re not an artist, it’s just nice to be inspired and keep digging deeper on somebody’s work you love, I think it makes you learn about yourself and bring those little moments of happiness into your life.

I still want to get a nice picture book about Niki de Saint Phalle’s life and work to be able to look at home, but for now, I can still go to lots of places in San Diego and enjoy her work. If you are in San Diego, go see it, it’s until March 4th!

EXPOSICION DE NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE EN SAN DIEGO: MI ARTISTA FAVORITA!

Me di cuenta del trabajo de Niki por primera vez cuando visité el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo en La Jolla, tienen un par de esculturas de Niki de Saint Phalle en el jardín (me fascinaron!).

Observé su trabajo porque es súper colorido, me recuerda mucho a Gaudí, que según ella si que inspiró su trabajo. Y no me había ni fijado que ya había visto varias obras de ella antes en San Diego con el famoso Nikigator que les enseñé una vez en el Parque Balboa y este que es increíble!

Hay un montón de obras de Niki De Saint Phalle en San Diego porque ella vivió aquí durante los últimos años de su vida. Nació en Francia, creció en Nueva York, luego vivió en Francia, viajó a España, Italia, y ella dice que es ciudadana del mundo (aquí pueden leer más acerca de ella).

Ahí mismito que me enteré de esta exposición en el California Center de Escondido inmediatamente planeé ir con la family. Me encantó ir a ver y aprender más sobre su trabajo y se que los niños y Derek lo disfrutaron también.

En la sala nos dieron un folletico con actividades para que los niños hicieran mientras veían la exposicón. Hicieron dibujos de algunas de las esculturas y dibujaron sus nombres con una alfabeto de Niki.

Una de sus grandes obras es un jardín de esculturas que soñaba con hacer desde su primera visita al Parque Güell de Gaudí en Barcelona.

¡Y lo construyó en San Diego! ¡Estoy tan orgullosa de eso! Desde que se que existe este jardín de esculturas llamado “Círculo Mágico de la Reina Califa”, he querido ir a visitarlo, pero solo lo abren el segundo sábado del mes, del 9 a 2. Entonces necesito planificar bien e ir! Ahora que los niños vieron fotos y la maqueta que Niki hizo se mueren por ir YA.

Yo nunca había tenido un artista “favorito” y creo que definir uno resulta muy chévere, aunque uno no sea artista se siente bien estar inspirado y seguir profundizando en el trabajo de alguien que adoras, creo que eso ayuda a  aprender más acerca de ti mismo y aparte te llena con pequeños momentos de felicidad!

Todavía no he encontrado un buen libro ilustrado sobre la vida y el trabajo de Niki de Saint Phalle para tenerlo en la casa y admirarlo siempre, pero por ahora puedo ir a muchos lugares en San Diego y disfrutar de su trabajo. Si están en San Diego aprovechen y vayan al museo, estará ahí hasta el 4 de marzo.
