There is a tradition here in San Diego to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the Old Town, it’s a huge very well organized event and a must to go every November 1st and November 2nd.

We didn’t have time to do any crafts but we certainly walked around the whole area which is big plus you enjoy every corner since it’s full of culture, tradition and celebration of día de muertos. As you know me, I was snapping away, my eyes were wide open.
I love that they have lots of stations where you can get your face painted, they have live music everywhere as well. Some corners give away Mexican hot chocolate and apple cider. If you stay until the end of November 2nd, they do a candlelight procession to the cemetery that I would like to do next time we go. We saw it when it was starting but we were leaving, we had spent the whole day and were super tired!
Community Altar
There is a cemetery in Old Town and they do set-up altars there and they’re beautiful. They created a huge community altar there and people could write messages to their loved ones that had deceased and place the message in the altar, then they were having a ceremony to burn them all. I thought it was such a great idea.
Adrian wrote a message to Mimi that day and placed it there, my heart almost exploded when I saw him do that, what a great way to keep the tradition of honoring her like we also do at home with our own altar.
Face Painting
Maya was the only one that got a half catrina face paint but as you walk around there are many many people that come dressed up and in really great costumes, we took some photos with them, they had intricate makeup too!

Nosotros no tuvimos tiempo para hacer manualidades pero es que caminamos por tooda el area que es super grande y uno se va parando en cada rinconcito porque hay cositas que ver, mucha cultura y tradiciones que aprender del del Día de Muertos. Y como ya me conocen, yo estaba toma que toma fotos, mis ojos estaban bien abiertos.
Me encantó que tienen un montón de estaciones donde te pueden maquillar la cara de catrina y tienen música en vivo por todos lados también. En algunas esquinas regalan chocolate caliente mexicano y sidra de manzana. Si te quedas hasta el final del 2 de noviembre puedes participar en una procesión con velas hasta el cementerio que me encantaría hacer la próxima vez que vayamos. Lo vimos cuando estaba empezando, pero ya nos íbamos, nos pasamos todo el día y estábamos muertos!
Altar Comunitario
En Old Town hay un cementerio, aunque bien chiquito igual ponen altares en las tumbas y son hermosos. También crearon un altar enorme comunitario allí y la gente podía escribir mensajes en unos palitos a sus muertitos y luego se pone el mensaje en el altar junto a todos los demás, el último día iban a tener una ceremonia para quemarlos todos. Me pareció bien bonito.
Adrian escribió un mensaje a su abuelita Mimi ese día y lo puso allí, mi corazón se infló inmediatamente al ver su iniciativa, y me parece que es una manera muy linda de mantener la tradición de seguir honrando a Mimi así como lo seguimos haciendo en la casa con nuestro propio altarcito.
Maquillaje de catrinas
Maya fue la única que se pintó la cara o solo media catrina pero cuando uno camina alrededor hay muchas muchas personas que vienen disfrazadas y con grandes trajes, y por supuesto unos maquillajes increíbles, nos tomamos algunas fotos con ellos!
Definitivamente el evento es muy divertido e interesante de visitar me parece que para ir en familia es lo mejor, lleno de mucha historia, cultura y tradición. Vayan y visiten todas las celebraciones del Día de los Muertos en Old Town San Diego!
