Our New Kitty Lokis – written by Maya

Maya wrote this as an assignment about our new kitty in class (she is in fifth grade), I thought it was such a great article so I asked her if I could post it here and she could translate it herself into Spanish. She said yes so please enjoy! I love to read it and see our adoption process from her perspective! I’m so proud!!

One day I was sitting at home finishing my homework, my mom comes in and asks “Are you done with your work?” I was almost done so I said “No, but in like 2 minutes I will. Why?” “ I don’t want to get you too excited.”- she answered. So once I finished I came over to her as she said “Look, aren’t they so cute?” – “OMG, they’re ADORABLE!! Are we adopting a kitten?!?” “yes”

So these first days of looking for kittens, we just couldn’t keep our eyes off them. They were just too cute! One of them had caught our attention, his name was Ash and he was a cute little kitten with soft grey fur and we had to find out how to adopt him. Sadly though, he was at a place called Cat Cafe which made you pay $14 per person and you had to buy a drink/snack to see the cats, so for all of us to be there we would have to pay about $60 so my mom didn’t want to risk it.

My mom ended up finding this cool website (San Diego Humane Society) where there were pictures of cats and you clicked on it then you could say you wanted to adopt and a couple of days later, they’ll call and tell you about the kittens and if they belong in your house. So we had said we wanted a lot of the kittens there, they were all too cute. when we found one, another caught our eye, then another, and another. They had emailed us that some kittens we wanted had already gotten adopted so we applied for more kittens.

THE CALL

And soon enough, we got called. When they called, they had told us that most of the kittens we wanted had already been adopted, which sucked but we had to deal with it anyway. Then we saw this cute little tabby kitten with orange & white fur and his name was Thunder and like all kittens, he was adorable. But we discovered that he just wasn’t right for us cause he had this medical thing that our older cat, Ally has and we don’t want to deal with that.

Since we’re already talking about Ally, let me tell you her personality. Ally is a Calico cat and she is blind, now Ally is about 17-20 years old and she doesn’t play anymore. That given fact, we have no idea how we are gonna get Ally to get along with this new kitty, because trust me, she’s dealt with this scenario before. We had gotten a kitten a couple of years ago, and Ally hated him. The only way they got along was playing together, and I’m sure the new kitten will love to play …so I don’t know what’s gonna happen. Hopefully, Ally will just give up and stop fighting one day.

Ok back to the call, in the call we had found another kitten that was even cuter named Roars, he was a tabby cat that had black & grey fur who hadn’t been adopted. We asked about him and they said “Whenever I came to pet him, he wanted to really grab my attention”- So we decided that we liked him and wanted him to be our new cat. And just like that, he was ours. Now, all we had to do was pick him up.

PICKING HIM UP

On the call, they said we could pick him up on Saturday at 10:30 (it was Thursday the day of the call) which was perfect because then I would actually be able to go. So on Saturday, my brother was sick so it was just me, my mom, and my dad who would be going to pick him up. When we got there, we had to wait a long time because so many people were adopting. Finally, they told us that only 1 person could go, so my mom went and in like 10 minutes she came back with this cage holding a super-cute tiny ball of fur that was very loud and meowed A LOT (I can now understand why his name was Roars).

HIS PERSONALITY

When we took him home, we had him locked in my room and he was really scared to get out of the cage so we put some food to lure him out. Once he was out, he started to explore my room and it didn’t take him long to find the toys and play with them. He ended up playing with my feet and my brother’s feet, he was just too cute!! After some time playing with him, I went to see Ally and she was HUGE! Like the biggest cat in history. Now all I could think of was what we were gonna name him.

NAMING HIM

It was kind of hard to name him, and I admit I was a little picky with the names.

The very first suggestions of names were actually to keep his name as Roars because it was cute but then my mom started to say that “Roars” was hard to pronounce, so that was off the list. Another name was Tucker but that was off the list immediately cause I hated that name. I ended up looking at websites to see what names they had, and soon enough I actually found one that I liked: Loki, but the rest of the family had to like it to name him that. My mom said it didn’t quite match, but we could try it. My mom said that “Loki” sounds like “low-key” when you say it so she said that adding an “s” at the end making “Lokis” would be better, so now that’s his name. Another reason his name is Lokis is that “loquito” means “crazy” in Spanish and trust me, that’s the best way to describe him.

ALLY AND LOKIS: THEIR RELATIONSHIP

Soo… by now you’re probably wondering how Ally is dealing with all of this. Answer: she’s doing ok…but she still hates Lokis. But she won’t hit him while they’re eating, which might be the way that they get along, so far though nothing has changed. She barely hits him as much as she used to so…

I’m so happy that we got a kitten in the first place, and I couldn’t imagine it being any other way. I’m also glad that we were all able to decide a name for him, now I think back to when his name used to be Roars and I feel that that just doesn’t match with him anymore like how it used to. All in all, I’m really happy that his name is Lokis. The end.

ADOPTANDO A LOKIS (MI GATO) – ESCRITO POR MAYA

Maya escribió este artículo como un proyecto en la clase de inglés (ella está en 5to grado), me gustó tanto que le pedí si lo podía publicar aquí y que por favor lo tradujera al español. ME dijo que si! ¡Me encanta leerlo y acordarme del proceso de adopción de Lokis desde su punto de vista, que orgullo!

Un día estaba sentada en casa terminando mi tarea, mi mamá entró y me preguntó “¿Terminaste con tu trabajo?” Casi había terminado, así que dije “No, pero en unos minutos lo termino. ¿Por qué?” “No quiero emocionarte demasiado” – respondió. Entonces, una vez que terminé, me acerqué a ella y me dijo: “Mira, ¿no son lindos?” – “¡¡Dios mío, son PRECIOSOS !! ¿¡¿Vamos a adoptar a un gatito?!? ” “sí”

Así que durante esos primeros días de buscar gatitos, no podíamos dejar de verlos. ¡Eran demasiado lindos! Uno de ellos había llamado nuestra atención, se llamaba Ash y era un gatito muy lindo con pelo gris y teníamos que averiguar cómo adoptarlo. Lamentablemente, estaba en un lugar llamado Cat Café que te hacía pagar $14 por persona y tenías que comprar una bebida / bocadillo para ver a los gatos, así que para que todos estuviéramos allí tendríamos que pagar alrededor de $60, así que mi mamá no quería arriesgarse.

Mi mamá encontró otro sitio web (San Diego Humane Society) genial donde había fotos de gatos y hacías click en él, entonces podrías decir que querías adoptar y un par de días después, te llamarían para contarte sobre los gatitos y si podrían ser adecuados para tu casa. Nos habían enviado un correo electrónico diciéndonos que algunos gatitos que queríamos ya habían sido adoptados, así que buscamos más gatitos.

LA LLAMADA

Muy pronto, nos llamaron. Cuando llamaron nos dijeron que la mayoría de los gatitos que queríamos ya habían sido adoptados, que triste, pero teníamos que aceptar eso de todos modos. Luego vimos a un gatito lindo atigrado naranja y blanco y su nombre era Thunder y como todos los gatitos, era adorable. Pero descubrimos que simplemente no era adecuado para nosotros porque tenía este problema médico que tiene nuestra gata mayor, Ally, y no queremos lidiar con eso.

Como ya estamos hablando de Ally, déjame contarte acerca de su personalidad. Ally es una gata Calico y es un poco ciega, ahora Ally tiene entre 17 y 20 años y ya no juega. Por eso, no tenemos idea de cómo vamos a lograr que Ally se lleve bien con este nuevo gatito, porque créeme, ella ha lidiado con este escenario antes. Una vez trajeron a un gatito hace un par de años y Ally lo odiaba. La única forma en que se llevaran bien era jugando juntos, y estoy segura de que al nuevo gatito le encantará jugar… Así que no sé qué va a pasar. Con suerte, Ally se rendirá y dejará de pelear algún día.

Volviendo a la llamada, habíamos encontrado otro gatito que era aún más lindo llamado Roars, era un gato atigrado con negro y gris que no había sido adoptado. Preguntamos por él y dijeron: “Siempre que venían a acariciarlo, él realmente quería llamar mi atención”, así que decidimos que nos gustaba y queríamos que fuera nuestro nuevo gato. Y así, él fue de nosotros. Ahora todo lo que teníamos que hacer era recogerlo.

RECOGIÉNDOLO

En la llamada, dijeron que podíamos recogerlo el sábado a las 10:30 (era el jueves el día de la llamada), lo cual fue perfecto porque entonces podría ir yo. El sábado mi hermano estaba enfermo, así que solo mi mamá, mi papá y yo fuimos a recogerlo. Cuando llegamos, tuvimos que esperar mucho tiempo porque mucha gente estaba adoptando. Finalmente nos dijeron que solo una persona podía ir, así que mi mamá fué y en 10 minutos regresó con la jaula donde estaba una pequeña bolita de pelo súper linda que era muy ruidosa y maullaba MUCHO (ahora puedo entender por qué su nombre era Roars).

SU PERSONALIDAD

Cuando lo llevamos a casa, lo encerramos en mi habitación y tenía mucho miedo de salir de la jaula, así que le pusimos algo de comida para atraerlo. Una vez que salió, comenzó a explorar mi cuarto y no tardó en encontrar los juguetes y jugar con ellos. Terminó jugando con mis pies y los pies de mi hermano, ¡era demasiado lindo! Después de un tiempo jugando con él, fui a ver a Ally y ella se veía ENORME como la gata más grande de la historia. Ahora todo lo que podía pensar era cómo le íbamos a nombrar.

NOMBRÁNDOLO

Fue un poco difícil nombrarlo y tengo que admitir que fui un poco quisquillosa con los nombres. Las primeras sugerencias de nombres fueron en realidad mantener su nombre como Roars porque era lindo, pero luego mi mamá comenzó a decir que “Roars” era difícil de pronunciar, así que ese quedó fuera de la lista.

Otro nombre era Tucker, pero estaba fuera de la lista inmediatamente porque yo odiaba ese nombre. Terminé buscando en sitios web para ver qué nombres tenían, y encontré uno que me gustó: Loki, pero al resto de la familia le tuvo que gustar para nombrarlo así. Mi mamá dijo que no encajaba del todo, pero que podíamos intentarlo. Mi mamá dijo que “Loki” suena como “low key” cuando lo dices, así que dijo que agregar una “s” al final para hacer “Lokis” sería mejor, así que ahora ese es su nombre. Otra razón por la que su nombre es Lokis es porque él es muy loquito y créanme, esa es la mejor manera de describirlo.

ALLY Y LOKIS: SU RELACIÓN

Entonces … a estas alturas probablemente te estés preguntando ¿cómo se encuentra Ally con todo esto? Respuesta: Está bien… pero todavía odia a Lokis. Pero ella no le pega mientras comen, que podría ser la forma en que se lleven bien, hasta ahora, aunque nada ha cambiado. Ella no le pega tanto como solía hacerlo, así que…

Estoy tan feliz de tener un gatito, y no podía imaginarlo de ninguna otra manera. También me alegra que todos estuvimos de acuerdo con su nombre, ahora pienso cuando su nombre solía ser Roars y siento que ese ya no encaja con él como solía serlo. Estoy muy feliz de que se llame Lokis. Fin.
